Editor Review
We rated the Senseo SL7810/65 Gourmet Coffee Maker our #2 single cup coffee maker of 2011. The Senseo is an excellent coffee maker with thousands of happy customers. It’s one of the few coffee makers currently on the marker that produces a frothy coffee layer when brewing a cup of coffee. This is due to the Senseo gently pushing the fresh coffee through the coffee pod and into a patented “frothing chamber”. From there the Senseo distributes either a single or double serving of gourmet coffee simultaneously in under 45 seconds flat.
The single of double serving is either a 4oz or 8oz cup of coffee. The 4oz serving will require one senseo coffee pod and the 8oz serving will require two pods which sit on top of each other in the pod chamber. There are many different kinds of pods available from cappuccino to expresso, and Vienna: Hazelnut Waltz to Paris: French Vanilla. In all there’s about a dozen or slightly more different kinds of Senseo pods available which will satisfy almost any coffee lover.
In conclusion, the Senseo gourmet coffee maker is an excellent system and has been proven worthy by many coffee lovers with years of faithful service. The Senseo coffee maker is an excellent choice with inexpensive coffee pods averaging about $0.25 per pod which is the least expensive coffee pods currently available on the market. The inexpensive price of the pods and the fact that it’s a sturdy and well built coffee maker should make any coffee connoisseur delighted. Pick one up today, you’ll be brewing rich, hot, flavorful and frothy coffee for years to come.

We’ve had our Senseo coffee maker for about 4 years now. Fortunately it wasn’t one included in the recall and we use it every day. We bought it for $35 and it came with the large water reservoir. We love it so much we’ve a few more for family members. Wish I could find another at the price we paid!
I received the Senseo coffee maker as a birthday gift 2 years ago and use it almost daily. I’m the only coffee drinker in the house and hate to waste a full pot of coffee if all I want is one or two cups. Making coffee with a Melitta one-cup filter is just too much work compared to the simplicity of the Senseo coffee maker.
The Senseo coffee maker has a reservoir that is easy to fill, and the pods are very convenient to just drop into the pod holder. Two tips I picked up from a single-serve review web site:
1: Pre-moisten the coffee pod so that the edges seal better to the holder, and
2: Preheat your milk so that the milk doesn’t cool the coffee when it pours into your cup. I preheat my milk for 30 seconds in the microwave, easy to do while the water is warming up.
I like being able to make a quick double for my travel mug when I’m running late–much faster than driving to Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks and not knowing how long the line will be.
I love to show off my machine for company. I can accommodate everyone, whether they want regular or decaf, mild or strong, etc.
My only wish is that there could be more varieties to choose from. Plus a little hot chocolate would be nice–especially with the foam on top that the machine makes with every cup. K-cups seem to own the market on variety.
Yes, my machine was one of the ones that was recalled. While I had no problem with the old machine, Philips made it very simple by shipping the new machine by FedEx and requesting that the old one be shipped back at their expense in the same packaging. And I was surprised with a pretty white one which replaced the old black one. The white one goes better in my kitchen, a silly thing to obsess about, but I like it.
All in all, the Senseo is quick, easy, fun, and convenient. It’s also a lot cheaper than buying on the road.
I love this coffee maker. The coffee is delicious, rich, and velvety. I’ve never been able to make coffee that I really like at home. I’ve tried different coffee makers, different coffee brands, filtered water, but nothing satisfies – until now. This machine has slashed my coffee budget at least by half. Now I don’t even want to go out for coffee. I can make great cup right at home and it’s perfect every time. I also like that I can just make one cup at a time. It was more than worth the money.
I love my Senseo. It simply makes better coffee then Kurig or any other single serve coffee maker. I’ve had them all. It takes up less counter space side to side and top to bottom.
For a fast and truly flavorful cup of coffee the Senseo units are simply the best. The machine is simple and durable and easy to keep clean. We have had one in daily use for 3 years with no problems at all. The pods are reasonably priced and widely available from Amazon merchants and at the local Costco and supermarkets. There is even a variety pack with 4 different coffee blends in the box.
The Senseo uses steam and a pressure mechanism that produces a cafe Americano that is very close to what I get from my $500 espresso machine but with a lot less fuss and no cleanup. At $0.50 per cup it makes better coffee than I can get at a Starbucks – in fact it is impossible to get a real cafe Americano at a Starbucks or any of the other places with their computer controlled machines. They just make an expresso and dilute it with hot water for a miserable cup of coffee with zero crema.
Recommend getting the larger water 1 liter reservoir that replaces the one that comes with the coffee maker and doubles the number of cups you can make without refilling.
For the best coffee from a home coffee maker I use the DeLonghi DC312 on its slow brew cycle setting, but when I need that first cup in the morning an time is of the essence the Senseo coffee maker is hard to beat.
Yes, you have to use two pods per cup to get decent coffee and that is exactly what you’ll do. It still has far and away the most choices of good pods here on Amazon and in stores, and is much cheaper to use than Keurig. We like to use two Baronet Coffee Organic Espresso Dark, Fair Trade, 18-Count Pods (Pack of 3) with one Wolfgang Puck Coffee Pods, Sorrento Colombian Swiss Water Process Decaf Blend, 18-Count Box (Pack of 3) and one CafĂ© Halo Ethical Addiction Coffee Pods, 16-Count, 4.23 Ounce Bags (Pack of 6). This is 25% decaf coffee that is delicious for about 50 cents per cup. Black coffee fans will love the orange foam on top of the cup produced by the Senseo, but we pollute ours with 2 T. of Starbucks mocha powder, a little SB Carmel sauce, some cinnamon and milk. It tastes exactly like SB’s Mocha, much faster, without the extra calories and saves us $3 every day.
I am a little by of a coffee snob and used to own a $600 Saeco. After our $aeco broke and was going to cost a fortune to fix, I came across the Senseo.
The quality of the coffee it makes almost compares. Definately close enough to $aeco, for a fraction of the price.
However, to really enjoy the potential of this machine – learn how to make your own pods.
Check the web, search for how to make your own senseo pods , or try to understand my instructions..
All you need are flat 4 cup US paper coffee filters, a measuring spoon that approximates the circumference of the Senseo pod holder and something to push into the measuring cup to form the pod shape. I use a shot glass. Lay the filter over the measuring cup, press it into the measuring cup with the shot glass and voila, you have a pod raeady for YOUR favorite coffee. Fill it up and fold the rest of the filter over and enjoy.
Not only can you enjoy your own favorite coffees, you will also likely save a lot of money vs buying the pricey pods.
I found that my system works best with the double pod holder and coffee very finely ground.
Anyway I love this machine.
This machine is awesome! You can’t beat the ease and the price. Does the job and does it right! Love the foam on the top of each cup.
I have wanted this coffee maker for a year after using one at my daughter’s and had to wait until they got the bugs out of the previous one (my daughter had no problems with hers). The price at Amazon is excellent and the coffee maker is great. I’ve tried coffee from other makers of this type and found that the Senseo is the best for me. I ordered the pods from Amazon and they were reasonably price, though I will probably look around a little more. But wanted to say..I’m lovin’ this coffee maker.
We have this machine, bought in 2004 and used 2-3 times a day. It still works fine, but it’s white and we wanted a black one to match our new kitchen appliances. So the old one goes into storage in case the new one breaks down.
There are a lot of so-called “single-serving” coffee makers on the market today. My wife and I have been very select coffee drinkers all our marriage – nearly 30 years. We started with a beautiful La Pavoni expresso maker, which we still have although we had it completely overhauled about 8 years ago.
When we saw the Senseo we thought we’d try it because it seemed much less trouble – although we were highly suspicious of anything that made coffee from “pods” because we were used to grinding our own coffee from beans stored in air-tight containers in the freezer and each cup of coffee we made was made from freshly ground beans.
From the very beginning we were impressed with the Senseo. Push a button and 90 seconds later the water for coffee is at temperature. Push another button and you have a fresh cup of delicious hot coffee, complete with a nice “creama” or frothy top just as you would get from an espresso coffee machine. The single serving button gives you a cup a little larger than the single serving espresso you typically get – say in a Parisian or Italian coffee house. This may not be enough for American coffee drinkers used to a large mug of coffee. If not, you can push the “double” button and get either a large cup of coffee or two small cups the size of an espresso drink described above. Coffee pods come in all strengths (light, medium, dark roast), flavors etc. and are sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Safeway etc. and online at Amazon and lots of other places.
The pods come 18 to a package and a package costs about $4.75 – $5.25 depending on how many you buy and where. That averages about 25-30 cents per cup of coffee if you choose the single serving button – twice that for the double serving button. This is more than if you make drip coffee or do espresso with fresh ground beans, but I think it’s worth the convenience. The resulting cup of coffee is really good – rich, hot, flavorful and frothy. We used “Dark Roast” but tastes vary.
As I said earlier, our 6-year-old machine still works pefectly and we use it every day, at least twice but more often quite frequently.
When we have guests we sometimes go back to the automatic drip coffee maker so we can put a whole pot of hot coffee on the table. But even then, if guests request, we can make cups so fast that it’s no problem to serve 4-6 guests a hot cup, all done within 4-5 minutes.
We recommend the senseo to friends without reservation.
However, there is one thing you must remember if you use this machine – and this is probably true for any machine: If your water has a lot of minerals in it – especially calcium – you must clean this machine periodically. The instructions say every 90 days – but where we live the calcium builds up quickly so we do it about every 60 days. This is important. A friend of ours through out his machine because he said the coffee started tasting bad and I’m sure sure it was because he wasn’t cleaning the machine at all. It’s easy to clean – just run half vinegar and half water through it once, and then pure water once. All you do is put in the vingegar and water, then push both buttons (the single serving and the double serving) and the machine pumps all of the water / vinegar solution through the machine without stopping. Of course, you have to be sure it has a contained below large enough to receive all of this liquid.
Also, depending on the mineral deposits in your water, you may need to push a needle or pin through the pod holder drain hole once in a while because sometimes a grain of coffee or calcium build-up clogs the hole.
The machine comes with a reservoir tank for water, two pod holders (one pod and two pods) and a supply of coffee (one package of 18 pods).
You can order accessories for the machine, which include:
A double sized water reservoir (I recommend it highly), replacement pod holders, and a specil pod holder for making espresso coffee especially. You can also buy other replacement parts, but there are only two other parts besides the reservoir and pod holders. These two parts are the small overflow or spill catcher plastic part and a metal “grill” where you sit the coffee cup.
The new machine we ordered from Amazon (in black rather than the white one we already had) has one difference from the machine we bought 6 years ago: the spout where the coffee comes out it shorter, making it higher from the grill where the coffee cup sits. This is an improvement because now you can sit a large mug under the spout whereas the old machine made this difficult because the spout extended down quite far – made to accommodate short little demitasse (sp?) or espress cup sizes. You can still use these smaller cups with the new spout but now you can also use a large mug if you want a “full-size” cup of coffee.
Summary Good Points:
1. The coffee is very good.
2. The coffee maker is very reliable. Our first one has worked without fail for 6 years and is still working. We just wanted a different color.
3. The coffee maker works very fast. A fresh cup of coffee from “0″ to finished cup in about 3 minutes. After the first cup, the next cups can be made in less than 1 minute.
4. The price is far below most other single serving coffee makers: We bought our new one from Amazon in April 2010 for $49 with no cost for shipping.
5. The price for each cup of coffee is below any other single serving coffee makers that I have researched. This coffee maker costs between 25 and 30 cents per cup. Double that if you make a typical American “mug” sized cup of coffee.
6.Coffee pods are available at Wal-Mart, Safeway, Targe and other major chains. You can buy a “pod-maker” which allows you to make your own pods. This may be cheaper but we prefer the convenience of commercially produced pods since the coffee is still very affordable even if you buy the pods ready-made.
Caveat: Coffee will turn bad if you do not perform simple regular cleaning – i.e. run half vinegar/half water through the machine at least every 90 days. Every 60 days is better if you live where the water has high mineral content and creates build-up in the machine. If you have a water softener or filter or use bottled water this may keep the machine cleaner longer.
Summary bad points:
We have had good experience with Philips products. They are a Dutch company (perhaps owned by the Royal Family, I’m not sure) and they seem to research companies and then buy them. Some examples are this Senseo machine and their Sonicar electric toothbrush.
Except for their TV, we have had good experience with Philips products. We bought a Philips TV and a Philips DVD/VHS player. The TV works OK but we can’t get the player/recorder to work with the TV. When we called their support line the only suggestion they had was to buy another player. So for TVs and DVD/VHS player / recorders we stick to Japanese products.
But the Senseo coffee maker is an excellent machine and we recommend it highly.
IMHO, Senseo makes the best coffee, hands down. I found a foolproof method for making your own pods. All you need are a 1/3 cup measuring cup, a small vitamin bottle, 4c basket coffee filters, and a 7gram coffee scoop. Single pads are 7grams of coffee, doubles are 14grams.
Just be careful not to overstuff the pads.
My family is from the Netherlands and the Senseo coffee maker has overtaken regular drip coffee maker there. So much so that instead of being asked if you would like a cup of coffee you might be asked if you want a “little Senseo”. I say “Ja!”
I love Senseo so much I had to buy a second machine to have at work! The coffee is great and I like that I am not cluttering up the landfill with little Keurig cups. Downside is not being able to get some of the varieties of pods at the local grocery store.
My first Senseo Machine died after many years of service and I had to go to a regular small coffee maker that I have that makes like 5 cups. It was awful every morning having to measuring the coffee grinds and waiting for it to perculate into the carafe. Then U have to wash the carafe. I was miserable until I received my new senseo single serve. Once again my life is easy. I put water in the tank put my cup under the spout and my coffee is ready in less than a minute. Live is good again.
I must admit that the first few cups of coffee I made in my new Senseo machine tasted like plastic. I was very worried that I would have to return it. But I kept at it and boy am I glad I did! I think the biggest problem was that I was using the Dark Roast coffee that came with the coffee maker. When I finally took a closer look at the bag of coffee pods, I saw that they had expired in ‘09! That could explain the less than fresh taste! Since then I have loved every single cup of coffee that I have made. Even the decaf is delicious. And I love the frothy layer on top of each cup. Really tastes and looks like you’re drinking something special. So happy with the purchase. Glad I gave it a chance!
I grew up with this coffemaker and missed it very much here in Canada. Finaly found one in the States. Exactly same coffee maker as in Europe. Love it ! Love it !
After reading and reading reviews and comments, I settled on the Senseo although I was conflicted. I like the fact that it is easier to use your own coffee in the Kerig coffee maker, I was intrigued by the coffee foam. My choice was spot on. I love the coffee maker and the Dark Roast so much that I found a “used” one to take to work!
The machine does make rather small, European cups of coffee but I have a smaller mug and make two cups. I fill it up with hot milk and off I go. This is my favorite Christmas toy! (I bought it at Christmas for myself.)
Watch for specials on the coffee products themselves. They are expensive.
I received the Senseo 7810 on 4/19/11. I followed the instructions to prep it by running a couple of tanks of clear water through (it came out cold, but that was what it was supposed to do) then immediately brewed a fresh cup of coffee using one pod for a small cup–with crema! It was perfectly fine,as far as no bad tastes, like plastic or anything, as commented about in several reviews. 18 pods of dark roast came with the machine. My coffee was not as strong as I like, but I’ll be experimenting to find what will suit me best. I am happy with this, especially with the crema feature and will NOT be returning it!!!
We’ve purchased the Senseo machine since we know it from Germany where it is quite popular. I don’t drink coffee but my husband does drink around 2 cups per day, which makes this machine perfect, as you always get a good coffee per serving that will always be fresh and creamy instead of having a whole pot of coffee cooked that is less tasty and a waste for just one person. It is easy to handle, quick and he is the happiest man in the morning, looking forward to his creamy coffee. And the guest will love it too. It is definitely a good investment if you like good coffee and it is a “press-the-button” away from you.
We finally replaced our 4 year old Senseo Single Serve. I was a little worried about the negative reviews, especially the “smell” factor. When we unpacked the machine, there was no odor. It performs beautifully, as did our last machine. We use the machine 3 to 4 times a day, and could not be more pleased.
I was served Senseo coffee in a restaurant and it was honestly the best cup of coffee I had ever had. The waitress said they made the coffee one cup at a time and told me the brand was Douwe Egbert – so I was on a mission when I got home to find that coffee! Just had to have that crema on top
This search of course led me to the Senseo coffee pod machine and I’ve been in love with it from Day One. I’ve purchased 3 so far – one for a gift and 2 to use at different locations. The only problems I’ve had have been operator errors
Getting in a hurry and pushing the 4 oz buttom to prime the machine – only to realize I had not latched the top down, and bumping the bottom of the reservoir when sitting it back on the machine. If you bump the little place where the water is siphoned out, guess what? You got it, water comes out! Anyway, if you pay attention to what you’re doing you should have no problems. I have tried maybe 10 varieties of the coffee and love them all (haven’t tried the flavored ones like vanilla or hazelnut). It is a great machine and I highly recommend it.
I read so many reviews of different individual coffee makers that my head was spinning. I really liked the fact that the Senseo produced the froth and the only downside of the Senseo seemed to be that they don’t offer every flavored coffee that you can imagine. So when I started my pros and cons list it ran something like this: Pro: Senseo was less expensive than most other single cup brewers; Senseo provided a frothy finish to each cup; Con: Senseo didn’t have as many options in the flavored coffee group. Well, I don’t particularlly like flavored coffee so what was the problem? NONE!! And I am very satisfied with my choice. My husband and I use it every day. Our 12 cup maker is lonely sitting beside the Senseo on our counter and only gets used when we do a special grind for a full pot. I would recommend Senseo to anyone who likes a cup of good rich coffee and if you only like fancy flavors sometimes, buy some flavored creamer. Oh, and by the way, I have had no trouble at all with any leakage as some reviewers talked about. Must have been a problem on older models.
My sister gave me one of these and I am really enjoying it. So far it is having no problems. I have used some Senseo brand coffee pods but I have also used regular tea bags in it with no problem. Great Product!
