Editor Review
This coffee maker is ideal for a single coffee drinker household, people who have to commute to work or any office personnel with the ability to keep their own coffee maker at their work. The Black & Decker DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker brews a generous 15 oz cup of fresh coffee right into the included stainless steel travel mug and turns off automatically. This cuts down on cleaning time and helps when you’re running late with no time to spare. The thermal coffee mug is also tapered at the bottom to a 2.5 inch diameter so it’ll fit easily into most car cup holders. The Brew ‘n Go also has a permenant filter so it cuts down on messy clean ups that always seem to be associated with disposable filters. To make it even easier during the clean up process, the travel mug, permenant filter and filter basket are all dishwasher safe. Many people also use the Brew ‘n Go to heat up water for them or a loved ones who would rather have tea, hot chocolate, soups or even oatmeal instead of coffee. It also has a small footprint which measures in at only 7″ wide, 9.75″ tall and 6″ deep. If your in the market for a small and easy to use single cup coffee maker, or you’re on a tight budget, you won’t find a less expensive coffee maker on the market, it truly a no brainer.

This nifty little coffeemaker is difficult to find in stores, so I was glad to see it at Amazon. It saved my marriage because my spouse doesn’t drink coffee (hates the stuff) and there’s no pot to clean. Even though it comes with a huge mug, the coffee tastes best when you use it with a normal china mug or cup, and with beans that are ground fine. I’m on my second one — it lasts about four to five years in daily use. Not bad for the money. I won’t drink coffee that’s been sitting for more than five minutes, so the Brew ‘n Go is perfect. If you’re the only Joe drinker in the house, it’s an absolute must!
I read the reviews before ordering this personal coffee maker, and since some people had ‘overflow problems’ and some talked about coffee not being quite hot enough, I almost didn’t get it.
Glad I went ahead. First, I put a small tray under the coffee maker in case of an overflow…I also always use a No. 1 size Mellita Filter in the basket, which makes it easier to clean and may help with the overflow problem, since I have never had that happen.
I use Folger’s Classic Roast and use one and a half scoops with a regular size coffee scooper..I fill the cup within about 1/2″ of the top and pour it in…put the cup in place, click the switch and ……perfectly hot, full bodied coffee every time with no problems at all so far…have used it about 20 times.
It makes a great large cup of coffee and the mug has a very comfortable feel to it. This coffee maker comes in handy when you don’t want to mess with a full pot and it is very fast. I couldn’t be more pleased – well worth the price!
This is a great fast single coffee maker. Perfect for that one person ‘large’ cup. The travel cup actually does fit into my vans cup holder. The coffee is hot right after it is brewed, but it does not have a heating system, so will start to cool immediately, which is not a problem. Just start the coffee maker a few minutes before you need it and go.
In this case, more is not better. Do not fill the coffee maker to the top with water, leave a little space, about 1/2 inch. This will solve the overflow problem. It is better to sacrifice that couple ounces of potential coffee than to clean up the overflow mess.
I really like the permanent filter. After using the paper filters for so long, and always running out of them, the permanent filter is great to work with and cleaning is a faucet away.
Overall, a great unit for that single coffee user.
I recently read all of the customer reviews on this product and found myself laughing. Doesn’t anyone know how to brew a cup of coffee? This product is excellent and I haven’t had one single problem with my Brew ‘n Go.
I’ve heard that it overflows; that they can’t pour the water into the unit; that the coffee tastes like rubber; that the maker turns on magically–or won’t turn on at all; that coffee grounds get everywhere, etc. I think the problem must be with the users themselves.
The first time I used this, I read the instructions beforehand, plugged it in, put my 2 tablespoons of coffee into the filter– which is great I might add–filled my cup up with water, poured it in, added sugar and creamer to my cup, put the lid on, put it under the brewer, hit the switch, then had a steaming cup of wonderful coffee in seconds. I got to throw out my electronic mug warmer, too, since the coffee stays hotter longer.
This product is great for people on the go, for people who only drink a cup of coffee a day, and for people who don’t like to spend an eternity cleaning up!
i have had the black and decker (i’m on my fourth one) for about 15 yrs. i have to cut filters down because the stores here don’t carry #1 filters but you can get around that by using the reusable filter that comes with the machine. its fast makes one cup and its always hot and good. you can be out the door in a flash no waste, you make what you need.i have had one that came with a mug and one that had a travel mug i bought one for my office and when i retired the girls begged me to leave it.i have purchased them for gifts and when they are on sale i buy an extra so as not to be without it if the old one should quit. they last longer than most big machines and are so small you could put one on a vanity sink in a hotel room. can’t recommend it highly enough. you won’t go wrong with this baby coffee maker.
I have used this personal coffeemaker for several years, and it works great with many handy features. No coffeemakers for less than six cups make decent coffee, so my rating is in comparison with other 4-cup or less models.
The little filter basket is a good size for the little single serving filter packs, and the included filter is good if you prefer to measure ground coffee. If fresh coffee is not available at your office, this model is very convenient and compact to use at the office.
The mug: I have a huge collection of useless travel mugs, but this mug is a great design – both for the car and for carrying around. It really keeps coffee hot a long time, and it is easy to drink from it with the lid on without dribbling coffee all over. The black rim does not have a weird taste like other mugs. Besides using it with the coffee maker, it gets a lot of use as a coffee mug, since the lid makes it easy to carry coffee without spilling at the office and the coffee stays hot.
In short, if you prefer a personal coffee maker, this model is a very good choice.
I have had this machine for five years now so I thought someone might like to here a long term review. Mine does not have a stainless cup, but my cup is tapered like this one.
Pros:
1) Brews 1 cup (I’m the only one who drinks it).
2) Quick, about 2 minutes to brew and 5 to finish dripping.
3) Easy to clean. I have rinsed the entire unit several times.
4) No trash. Comes with a permanent filter.
5) Filter cleans easily. Just tap out the coffee in the trash and rinse.
5) Can be used with a timer. See below for explanation.
6) Takes up very little space.
7) Can be used with other cups. As long as you don’t overflow the reservoir and your cup will fit under it, the cup will work.
Cons:
1) It is gravity fed through the filter so 5 minutes may be too long for some.
2) Be sure to line up the exit spout with hole. Once you get it you will see, but if you don’t you will have coffee all over your counter.
3) If you grind you coffee to fine, you will get coffee grinds on the inside of the machine. No big deal as you can rinse the unit off easily.
Timer:
Once you activate the unit it will run until the reservoir is empty. The only way to stop it is to unplug it. However, if you plug it back in it will pick up where it left of. If you activate it with it unplugged, it will start as soon as it is plugged in. Therefore, if you want coffee when you wake up, all you need is a wall timer (about $5 from many sources). Set the timer to activate in the morning when you want your coffee. Prepare the machine like normal, depressing the activation button. When the timer turns on in the morning the machine will begin brewing your coffee.
As a grad student with a more-than-hectic schedule, I usually roll out of bed and run out the door. This Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker and Travel Mug have saved the day! Water heats extremely rapidly and it takes no more than 2 minutes from turning the unit on until my coffee/tea is ready.
I use it to heat water for tea more often than I use it for coffee, and I’ve found that I have to let the tea steep a little longer than if I’d boiled the water on the stove, but it’s still extremely convenient and easy to use.
The 15-oz. travel mug retains heat well and has a rubber-coated handle and nonskid bottom, which is a nice feature. The coffeemaker can be used with a permanent filter or paper filters (I prefer using disposable unbleached paper filters to the wire basket filter, as it can be messy to clean from the coffee bean oil accumulations). The coffeemaker shuts off automatically after brewing, another nice feature for those on the go (and one less thing to worry about on the way to work).
My only complaint would be that the plastic-coated inside of the travel mug is scratched up from using spoons to stir in sugar.
Overall, a good value for a rapid, portable mug of joe. For those who are coffee junkies, this will save you hundreds of dollars over buying your morning coffee fix from Starbucks, Beaners or Second Cup.
For 17 dollars, come on!!! That’s like one plain shirt in Old Navy.
Here let me help you out if this coffee maker and you are compatible:
1. Do you drink alot of coffee? If yes then dont get this. Get the six-cup coffee maker. This is for people who drinks 1-2-3 cups a DAY. If you drink more than that it might frustrate you to constantly fill the compartment every now and then. But if you’re patient enough to wait for less than a minute, then get it.
2. No need for those filters. Saves the environment and money.
3. Do you want a quickie clean-up? If yes, the get this. Just rinse with water and you’re fine.
Hey guys, I read tons of reviews before buying this. I liked it because its light, portable, cleans easily, cheap and environmentally friendly (not to mention economically).
There are some negative in Amazon because they follwed the guidelines in the paper. Here’s my precaustions to have a perfect cup:
1. Make sure you dont fill it all with water. Try making 3/4 cups, just to be in the safe side.
2. Use Starbucks ground coffee—it’ll make you feel glad you’re saving $4.
3. You can use another mug or coffee cup to suit your taste. I got a smiley face mug from the 99c store. Some reviews mentioned that the travel mug smells like rubber when they bought it. duh! that’s because its new. All you have to do is wash it with dishwashing liquid. If that’s too difficult, then dont buy the coffee maker.
All in all, Im satisfied with my purchase. This is my first coffee maker (I personally bought) and it sure is very cute and useful. Its super cheap–but the most important aspect of it—IT WORKS.
Dont expect like those heavy-weight and dramatic coffee makers. This belongs to a whole new genre. Definitely not your poshy restaurant/hotel coffee maker. Its just a simple plastic toy-like coffee maker that works.
I think I better go. Im at work and making this review?! What’s wrong with me—I just like my Brew N Go
This is an excellent one cup coffee maker. It takes a little experimenting to determine how much coffee to use for desired strength. I use one a 1/8 heaping coffee scoop.
Auto shut-off is a great feature. It prevents the unit from running all day in case you forget to turn it off when you leave for work.
There is a design flaw. I observed that the water tended to overflow the filter. I discovered the reason: the hole in the bottom of the filter holder is too small – the water enters the filter faster than it can drip into the cup. Simple solution: take a few drill bits and by hand increase the diameter of the hole to about 3/16 of an inch. No more overflow.
This coffee maker is great! If all you’re looking for is a single-mug coffee maker that’s no hassle, this is the one for you. Two scoops of coffee into the reusable filter, a mug of water, wait 4 minutes, and you’ve got a hot, steaming cup of coffee in your hands!
Cleanup is a snap with the reusable filter. Dump the coffee and rinse. The filter, mug, lid, and another attachment are all dishwasher (top shelf) safe. The rest of the coffee maker can be cleaned up with a paper towel.
Folks with an overflow problem are overfilling the mug. If you fill the mug to the top with water, it’s going to overflow. Leave about 1/8″ of space between the surface of the water and the top of the mug and you won’t have a problem.
I am considering buying a second one just to have on hand. And you can’t beat the price, it’s less than $20!
I only started making coffee earlier this year, as a way to save money. No driving out of my way to the coffee shop; no paying a premium to have a barista make me a coffee. If I want an espresso, I still have to drive on down to Starbucks, but most times I just want a hot coffee in the morning at the office, and I would rather make it at home.
I’ve actually gone through two cheap standard-style coffee makers this year. One was a Hamilton Beach, and one was a General Electric. They made my beverage just fine, but the glass carafes wound up breaking just the same. They’re just not made for the rigors of daily use, and without the right carafe, the devices are useless.
The Black and Decker Brew ‘n Go fixes this problem and then some. Not only does it come with a brushed steel coffee cup with lid, the base isn’t heated, which means that any mug or cup you can fit under the drip opening will work just as well.
This is a good thing, because while the mug works fine, with a useful rubberized base that keeps it in place when on a hard surface, it also gets rather warm. The handle protrudes far enough that the user won’t normally touch the cup itself much, but it does get warmer than I’d like. I often use the cup as a carafe before pouring the coffee into a container that insulates better on both sides. It also pours incredibly well, as I never spill a drop of water when filling the reservoir, something I can’t say about the normal glass carafes I’ve dealt with previously. If it is submersed in water, liquid does get in between the metal exterior and plastic lip and interior, which is vexing, but it isn’t a crucial component of the coffee experience for me, so I’m not too concerned with it.
The permanent filter is nice in that it keeps me from having to buy new filters, but considering the low cost of filters, I would rather have used them than spend the extra time cleaning this one out. The fine mesh seems solid enough, but I still have to brush it out carefully after knocking out the grounds into the trash, which subbornly leave behind a good 20-25% of the black particulates to be washed out. I am concerned that one day my brush will knock out or compromise the mesh, and then I’ll be back where I was before, with a coffee maker that is missing a crucical component. Only time will tell how long it lasts.
The unit is easy to clean, the cofee tastes great, and it makes about 16oz. of coffee, which is my preferred intake in the morning. The cup is sturdy, and the coffee maker doesn’t require that I use this specific cup, so if something happened to it, I could still use the device. I’ve spent months trying to find a way to make coffee that is truly economical, and it seems I finally have. I make just enough coffee for myself, none goes to waste, and it tastes great.
I’ve been using my Brew `N Go coffee maker for over a week and love it. I had been using a Mr. Coffee 4-cup coffee maker for quite a few years. A full pot would actually fill two 10 ounce mugs of coffee. Some mornings I’d drink only one cup and throw out the rest. The Brew `N Go brews the one 15 ounce cup of coffee which seems to be just the right amount for me.
I’d sometimes forget to turn off my old coffee maker and the pot would end up with burned on coffee in the bottom, so I plugged a timer into the wall socket and plugged the coffee pot into the timer so it shut off after two hours. The Brew `N Go brews my coffee in a few minutes and shuts itself off. Thers’s no need for the timer and there’s no pot to clean.
I used to use two rounded scoops of coffee for a full pot of coffee in the old coffee maker. With the Brew `N Go, I use two level scoops for coffee of the same strength. The wire basket is nice, but I prefer to use a filter. I found that I can put a crease in two opposite sides of a 4-cup filter and it fits the Brew `N Go basket perfectly so I don’t have any grounds going down the drain.
I am a slow coffee drinker. With a regular coffee mug, I often had to reheat my coffee before I finished a mug of it. With the Brew `N Go’s insulated cup, I haven’t yet had to reheat my coffee before it’s all gone.
The Brew `N Go seems to meet all of my coffee brewing needs and I’ll spend 25% less on coffee, sugar and creamer. Eventually, the Brew `N Go will pay for itself in savings. So, what’s not to like?
First brought a Brew ‘n Go about 6 years ago when we were looking for a small coffee maker that we could use to make one or 2 cups of coffee a day with. It fit the bill prefectly. It was used every day for 6 years. The coffee is brewed at a high temp which makes great coffee and it only takes 2 1/2 minutes for a cup. The reuseable filter works great which saves on paper filkters and the mess that can come with them. Another great feather is that the coffee brewed goes directly into the cup you going to drink it from. We also use less coffee because you only brew the amount you want. After 6 years of fatefull service it finially wore out so we brought a new one. And it works just as good, very happy and would recommend this little work-horse to anyone.
I live alone and I don’t like the idea of making a whole pot of coffee just for myself. After doing some research on single cup coffee maker. I gave this one a try. I loved it. I just need to brew the coffee in the morning and take the cup with me and drink the coffee on my way to work. Works great.
I had an older version of the same product and by mistake threw away the filter. Didn’t matter, I used paper filters in it’s place and it worked great. Still does but I wanted the newer version with the cup that fit and could take with me to work. I still use filters only because it’s easier to clean that way.
